Oil Filter Recycling

Did you know that automotive oil filters still contain 6 to 8 ounces of motor oil that can be recovered and recycled?

Did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 180 million used oil filters are generated each year by "do-it-yourselfers"?

Each year this potentially results in over 8,000 gallons of oil being discarded in the garbage with the filters.

The Macomb County Health Department accepts used automotive oil filters from Macomb County residents through the Household Hazard Waste collection. The used filters are crushed to squeeze out the remaining oil. This oil is collected and sent for recycling. The filter is also recycled since it is made of steel.

When changing your own automotive oil, you can minimize the amount of oil left in the filter by immediately draining the filter and allowing it to drain for 24 hours.

Save your used filters, seal them in a leak-proof container or a zip lock bag, and bring them in to the Macomb County Health Department for recycling.
