Manufacturing is one of Macomb County’s most important industries, as it adds more than $13 billion to the local economy. In February 2019, the White House Council of Economic Advisors released a report that showed Macomb County as the top location in the country for the creation of new manufacturing jobs from 2016-2018, with more than 9,000 manufacturing jobs generated during that time. This is a testament to the opportunity still associated with production- based operations within Macomb County. It is also evidenced by the number of state-of-the-art engineering centers and industrious machining facilities.
Advanced manufacturing entities are the new collar of the manufacturing workforce, utilizing technology to have high precision and performance supply chain production systems that are capable of mass production with the flexibility of custom development. Last year, there was more than $1 billion total commodities purchased from Macomb County’s advanced manufacturing sector, with over
$348 million of those purchases originating from within the county. Through Macomb County's Business Retention Program there was more than $300 million invested in advanced manufacturing companies and facilities in Macomb County from 2014 to 2019.
Macomb County's skilled and talented workforce has been a driving force in the prosperity of manufacturing within the county for decades. As traditional manufacturing has evolved to advanced manufacturing, Macomb County has been at the forefront, ensuring the workforce has the enhanced skill level needed to compete in a globally competitive marketplace. As a result, there was a 39 percent job growth in advanced manufacturing from 2010-2018 in Macomb County.
This growth is also due to a greater focus on and investment in workforce development initiatives and programs in local government, private sector, and educational institutions. One of the most successful efforts has been the Manufacturing Day event. It is dedicated to giving local high school students hands-on experience and insights into the advanced manufacturing field, thus encouraging the next generation to pursue careers in the industry.

With its mighty advanced manufacturing capabilities, Macomb County has emerged as a leader in aerospace, robotics, tool and die, and its success is showcased in many ways. In the past 18 months nearly $750 million aerospace capital investments were made and in August 2019, a PricewaterhouseCoopers report ranked Michigan the best state in the Midwest and fourth in the nation for aerospace manufacturing attractiveness. Macomb County continues to be a steadfast leader in the region and state for meeting the demands of the rapidly evolving advanced manufacturing industry.
LOCAL SUCCESS IN ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
Baker Industries - Macomb Township, MI
Baker Industries is a provider of custom tooling, parts and fixtures primarily serving automotive and aerospace markets. The company has over 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Macomb County. In April 2019, Lincoln Electric announced its plans to acquire Baker. This acquisition complements Lincoln's automation profile with Baker's extensive in-house design and manufacturing capabilities, including machining, fabricating, assembly and additive manufacturing.
As part of the acquisition, Baker will be investing $5 million in real and personal property in Macomb Township and creating 50 new jobs. Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development worked with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to assist the company secure a $479,000 incentive package. The package included a business development grant of 400,000 from the state with another 79,000 in workforce training.
